Working mothers
Audience, Jeffery Say :
"I find the concept of the work and, in particular, the methodology to be the most interesting part of the project. Through the photographs, the demarcation between public realities and private spaces becomes most stark. The level of intimacy and the private moments caught by the images are what make them unique. And this have to be the result of a deep level of trust between photographer and subject, being able to photograph people doing things like praying that strangers are not privy to. This has resulted in a series of images that are sincere and truthful, even if the subjects are aware of the photographer’s presence.
While the differences in the private role of women in Singapore do not manifest greatly in the images in terms of race or religion, those between Hazel, who is married, and the three single women, are quite distinct. Hazel the mum hardly has time for herself while the other two single working women could afford to watch movies or prepare for the next day’s work. I hope that, if this project was to continue, that there could be more subjects who are working mothers because that could draw attention to this particular segment of the population who is particularly challenged."
